Why some cars have 4 pedals

The fourth pedal still confuses drivers

The design of a car with an automatic transmission provides for two control pedals, while a manual has three pedals. However, some cars are equipped with four pedals, and this can be confusing, for example, when buying a new one.

OBOZREVATEL figured out what this "extra" pedal is for and why automakers started installing it.

The installation of the fourth pedal was practiced in the early 2000s. It was assigned the same functions as for the handbrake. It could also start the lubrication of suspension components, switch the dipped and main beam, release windshield wiper from the reservoir, or even serve as an ignition key. They tried to replace the handbrake, which was located between the front seats, with an additional compartment for small items.

However, the innovation did not survive. The additional pedal confused drivers, and the rearrangement of the equipment showed that there was not enough space in the cabin to abandon an already successful solution. Therefore, car brands quickly returned to a more familiar design.
