What you need to do with roses in February to make them bloom lush in spring

ObozrevatelNews

There is a lot of gardening work that needs to be done before spring begins, but taking a few minutes to care for your roses in February will help them become healthy and strong.

According to experts, February is the best time to prune roses. The main reason for this type of work is to stimulate flowering and maintain plant health, but it is also important to prevent diseases, OBOZ.UA writes.

Make sure that the pruning shears you use have been cleaned with alcohol, and wipe your gardening tools after each cut.

How to prune roses properly

First, inspect the plant for broken, dying, or crossed branches. You'll want to cut them off as more air circulation around the roses will keep the plant dry and prevent fungal diseases.

Thus, remove any damaged or crossed stems. Then prune stems that look too weak to support their own weight. Finally, remove any old, lignified stems that are crowding the bush by cutting them to the base.

In late winter, be careful to prune rose bushes to only a third of the plant's height if you want to encourage larger flowers. More can lead to stress.

Most shrub roses don't need any other pruning, but they can be reduced by a third to promote early budding and a more compact shape.

Climbing roses should be pruned to maintain a structure of long stems pointing as sideways as possible, with side branches breaking vertically along them.
