Veterinarian names the best dog breed for exterminating rats
While it's common knowledge that a cat can help scare away rodents, did you know that one particular breed of dog was bred to do just that?
Dr. Joanna Woodnutt, a veterinarian at the British insurance company ManyPets, told the Express about dogs that catch rats.
"Jack Russell Terriers are bred to kill rats, and they are very good at it," she said.
The dogs of this breed are fast, they chase their prey and then pick it up and shake it, which breaks the rats' spines.
But hunting rats can also be dangerous for these dogs. First, you have to make sure that your dog doesn't eat the rat, because it may have eaten poison beforehand. Secondly, rats can hurt your dog because of their sharp teeth, so you should examine him for cuts or bite marks.
"Any injuries that break through the skin should be examined by a veterinarian," said the vet.
Another important factor is your dog's vaccinations. "Rats are a common source of leptospirosis," explained Dr. Woodnut. "Make sure your dog is fully vaccinated before allowing it to come into contact with rats."
