Space debris weighing more than 450 kg fell on a village in Kenya: impressive photos and videos
More than 450 kilograms of space debris fell in southern Kenya. Researchers have determined that it is a split ring from a rocket weighing more than 450 kg and 2.5 meters in diameter.
The rocket debris fell from the sky within a village in Makueni County. Employees of the Kenya Space Agency, along with an interagency team, were able to secure the area and remove the fragments for research, FoxWeather reports.
According to NASA, "rockets typically come in several stages, each optimized for different parts of the launch. When each stage finishes its part, it falls off, allowing a smaller one to continue its journey."
Following the discovery of a metal fragment of a space object in Makueni County, the Kenya Space Agency issued a statement noting that this was an isolated incident and would continue to be investigated in a timely manner in accordance with international space law.
"We wish to reassure the public that the facility does not pose an immediate security threat. Our experts will analyze the object, use the existing framework to identify the owner, and inform the public about the next steps and results," the Kenya Space Agency said in an official statement.
