Russia will not tempt the EU with cheap gas: Duda wants to disassemble Putin's ''pipeline'' once the war is over
Gas supplies from Russia to Western Europe should not be resumed, even if a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine is reached. Therefore, after the war is over, the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines should be dismantled.
Polish President Andrzej Duda told the BBC on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum. Without the existing gas pipeline, countries such as Germany will no longer be tempted to resume cheap gas supplies from Russia to support their economies.
"I can only hope that European leaders will learn from Russia's aggression against Ukraine and decide never to resume pumping gas through this pipeline," he said.
Duda emphasized the effectiveness of economic sanctions against Russia and called on European countries to resist pressure from companies wishing to restore business ties. "I believe that the Nord Stream pipeline should be dismantled. It is a very big threat to Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and other Central European countries. This is a threat from an energy and military point of view, as well as a huge economic threat because it means Russia's domination of Europe in economic terms," Duda added.
He also emphasized that no peace talks can take place without Ukraine. "I say this as the president of the Republic of Poland, as a neighbor of Ukraine, and as the president of a country that has gone through a very difficult historical experience. I mean the Second World War and the Yalta Conference, in which we were not included and where certain agreements were reached without our knowledge, and then we found ourselves behind the Iron Curtain and became part of the Soviet sphere of influence for almost 50 years," he said.
As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic predicts that the Nord Stream gas pipeline will be launched in 2025, which will allow the European Union countries to buy Russian gas again. Moreover, the owner of the Russian "pipe" will not be the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom, but an investor from the United States.
