Numerous studies and surveys have shown that beer consumers prefer to drink this drink cold. Therefore, Claudio Pellegrini, a professor of thermal and fluid sciences at the Federal University of São João del Rey in Brazil, calculated the optimal shape for a beer glass to keep beer cold for as long as possible.

The scientist described the shape of a beer glass in detail. He calculated the optimal design of the glass based on the principles of physics to keep the drink cold, Phys.org reports.

To determine the required shape of the glass, Claudio Pellegrini started with the simplest model – a glass with a smooth curve fixed around a vertical axis – with a standard height, radius, and base-to-top ratio. He also assumed an insulated base to ensure that heat loss would only occur from the top and sides.

The professor assumed both a fixed initial beer temperature for all testing purposes and that the glass would have negligible thermal resistance. This scenario ensured that changes in heat transfer would be a direct result of changes in the mold.

In performing his calculations, Pellegrini found that, unsurprisingly, the best shape is the one that is most popular – a glass with a small bottom that gets wider as it approaches the top.

The Brazilian researcher also admits that a small glass is really the best for beer so that the beer is drunk in one or two quick sips.
