Microsoft continues to update its Windows 11 operating system on a large scale, and soon one program will disappear from it. We are talking about the WordPad text editor, which was installed by default since the early versions of this OS.

According to iTechUA, the reason for abandoning WordPad was the program's obsolescence. It can no longer compete with the same cloud-based document management services.

In earlier versions of Windows, this application occupied an intermediate position between the standard Notepad, which provides a minimum of text editing capabilities, and the functional Microsoft Word. WordPad worked with text files in .doc and .rtf formats, but the set of available tools was limited. Today's free online document editing services offer much more options, so WordPad is used much less frequently.

For those who still want to keep the classic application, Digital Trends has suggested a way to do so. Before installing the 24H2 update, you need to make a backup copy of the C: Program Files Windows NT Accessories. If you move this directory, you can use it even after the OS is updated. However, the current version of the program is no longer supported, so you won't receive updates for it in the future.

It's worth noting that WordPad first appeared in the Windows 95 operating system in 1995. Unlike this application, which Microsoft decided to discontinue, the Notepad text editor, on the other hand, has a new feature. Now it can check spelling and perform auto-correction of text.
