Not BMW and Porsche: the world's best car brand has been named

Every year, the reputable Consumer Reports (CR) magazine ranks the best cars of the year. Recently, the list has been quite predictable: BMW, Toyota, and Porsche have traditionally been in the top. But this year, the leaderboard has undergone unexpected changes.

According to the latest estimates, Subaru has become the best car brand. Experts explained the reason why.

Among the 32 brands in the CR 2025 report, the top five remained unchanged from last year, but there was one notable difference – Subaru took first place. The main reason for this is reliability.

Alex Knizhek, an expert at Consumer Reports, noted that Subaru always works hard on its models, promptly eliminates defects, and improves car reliability.

"When Subaru develops or changes the design of a new model, they tend to repeat last year's successful techniques, and this approach helps to improve reliability. Subaru eliminates the shortcomings. In addition, their vehicles showed good results during our testing," commented Knizek.

Toyota has been at the top of the list for several years, but this year it dropped to ninth place.

For this ranking, Consumer Reports engineers and automotive experts put each car on the list through more than 50 tests.

"Everything from acceleration and braking to high-speed maneuvers on the highway is tested," said Knizek.

The experts then compare the performance of more than 250 models in terms of road maneuverability, comfort, reliability, fuel economy, safety, etc.

BMW, Lexus, Porsche, and Honda joined Subaru in the top five.

Dodge, GMC, Land Rover, Rivian, and Jeep are at the bottom of this year's ranking.

"Even the best brands can have cars that don't get such high marks. So, it's very important that you do your research and check the ratings of the vehicles you're interested in," said Knizek.

CR also tests the brands that produce the best used cars. This year, the publication gave the best ratings to Lexus, Toyota, and Mazda.
