Madeira to introduce a toll for certain routes: when will the fee take effect
The Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, known for its unique nature, will introduce a fee for the use of certain hiking trails starting from January 1, 2025. More than 30 popular trails will be subject to the restrictions.
According to Euronews, non-residents will have to pay extra money for a walk. The most popular routes that suffer the most from human impact will be subject to fees. This step is part of the local authorities' efforts to develop sustainable tourism. The funds raised in this way will be used to preserve Madeira's nature.
Currently, seven of the most visited routes are paid for. However, from the beginning of next year, this practice will be extended to all recommended routes on the Portuguese archipelago. Every non-resident over the age of 12 will have to pay 3 euros for such a walk. The list will include the routes of Pico do Areiro, Pico Ruivo, Levada do Riscu, Levada do Caldeirão Verde, Balkoês, Levada do Rei, Ponta de São Lourenço and others, managed by the Institute of Forestry and Nature Conservation (ICNF) in Madeira. A fine of up to 50 euros will be imposed for free visits.
Rafaela Fernandes, Madeira's regional secretary for agriculture, fisheries, and the environment, said the levy is necessary to protect the region's natural landscapes. In addition, local authorities note the growth of the tourist flow and seek to control it.
To pay the fee, tourists can use the regional government portal Simplifica. Alternatively, they can pay at the ticket office at ICNF stations located along many trails.
Madeira is currently experiencing an increase in tourism, especially during the peak seasons for hiking. Local authorities have launched an information campaign to inform visitors about the introduction of the fee and its purpose.
