Kazakh tennis player makes unprecedented move at French tournament. Video

Maksym InshakovNews

Kazakh tennis player Alexander Bublik (ATP No. 39), who played for Russia until 2016, let a ballboy play instead of him against Alexander Kovacevich (ranked 102) at a tournament in Montpellier, France. When the 27-year-old native of the Leningrad region was one game away from defeat, he handed the racket over to a young man who was serving the balls.

He managed to win it and then returned to his seat. It should be noted that in the end, Bublik sensationally failed to defend his title and was kicked out at the quarterfinals stage.

The Kazakh unexpectedly lost to the US representative in two sets - 3:6, 2:6. The match lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes. Thus, the best tennis player in Kazakhstan finished his journey at the tournament, and his opponent will now play in the final against the first seed, Russian Andrey Rublev (10th place).

Bublik has won this tournament twice before - in 2022 and 2023.

It should be noted that according to the rules of tennis, it is not allowed for someone to replace a player on the court, including a ballboy. The declared participant must play the full match, and the transfer of the right to play to another person is prohibited. If a player is unable to continue the match for any reason (e.g. injury), they must withdraw and the opponent is awarded the victory.

In addition, ballboys are not official participants in the match and are not allowed to enter the game.
