"It will not be normal for us": a European country opposes Russia's return to UEFA tournaments
The Romanian Football Federation (FFR) does not currently support the return of Russian teams to international competitions. At the same time, this position fully coincides with the actions of the European Football Union (UEFA), which does not intend to lift sanctions against the aggressor country.
This was stated in an interview with Sport24 by FFR Communications Manager Cătălin Popescu. According to him, two years ago, UEFA's leadership was testing the waters for the possible admission of Russian teams, but since then this issue has not even been raised.
"They said, 'Maybe it's time to bring Russia back to European tournaments'. Recently, our federation said that it would not be okay for us if Russia returned, and now we are sticking to this position. Since that discussion, time has passed and UEFA's decision has changed. Today, they are not going to allow Russia to participate in European tournaments. This does not mean that the Romanian federation wants Russian football to suffer. We just follow UEFA's position on this issue," Popescu said.
It should be noted that in the fall of 2023, UEFA was ready to return Russian youth teams to the tournaments, but ran into a massive boycott of national federations and canceled its plans.
