It can damage reputation: Apple tried to hide an important feature of the iPhone 16e
Apple has introduced the iPhone 16e, a budget version of the smartphone with simplified features compared to the main line. The main innovation was the integration of a modem based on the C1 chip created by Apple itself.
However, the technology of the C1 chip remains insufficiently disclosed, which could negatively affect the company's reputation and cause financial losses. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple was not entirely sure about the feasibility of promoting this model with a new component.
There are several reasons why there were doubts about the use of the C1 chip.
First, although Apple has been working on it for about seven years, there is a risk that Qualcomm could make claims of patent infringement and demand royalties.
Secondly, the new modem is still inferior to Qualcomm's solutions in terms of its characteristics. Therefore, there is a risk of receiving a wave of criticism from users in the case of performance comparisons.
According to Gurman, the C1's potential has not yet been fully realized. Apple aims to integrate the modem directly into the processor, which will reduce power consumption and production costs. However, these changes can take place no earlier than 2028.
At the same time, the company is already testing the C2 chip, which is expected to be used in premium iPhone models in 2026. Apple expects to fully surpass Qualcomm modems only with the release of the C3 chip in the future.
