The iPhone 17 is still a year away, but Apple is already preparing the new product and has planned some new details. This is evidenced by leaks that have already appeared in social media and the press.

Thus, analyst Ross Young shared with MacRumors that the standard iPhone 17 and a thinner model, informally called the iPhone 17 Air, will be equipped with ProMotion technology. This means that the screen of each device will be able to increase the refresh rate to 120 Hz. In practice, this will result in smoother scrolling of pages and video content.

ProMotion will be flexible - it will allow the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air displays to lower the refresh rate to a more energy-efficient one. Apple smartphones that are on the market already  have this feature. For example, iPhone 13 Pro models can reduce the frequency to 10 Hz, while models from iPhone 14 Pro to iPhone 16 Pro can reduce it to 1 Hz. This allows the constant on-display use that shows various elements of the lock screen even when the device is locked. What remains unclear is whether the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air will be able to lower the frequency to similar levels of 10 Hz or 1 Hz.

As for the new line, it is known that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus have the same refresh rate as their predecessors - 60 Hz.

The publication also noted that Ross Young is a fairly reliable source of information. He is the head of Display Supply Chain, a consulting company that deals with displays. In addition, he was the first source to report that the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will be equipped with larger displays of 6.3 and 6.9 inches, respectively. Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 17 series in September 2025.
