Potatoes belong to the basic food group, and for good reason. In our region, this starchy vegetable is used almost every day as a separate dish or an important ingredient.

OBOZ knows how to store potatoes for months so that they do not turn green, sprout, or spoil.

How not to store potatoes

Potatoes, like other foods, need air circulation, so don't put them in a plastic bag. It is much better to store them in a mesh or paper bag, away from other vegetables.

This primarily applies to onions and tomatoes, which emit ethylene gas. Thanks to this substance, the ripening process of vegetables and fruits is significantly accelerated.

For potatoes, ethylene is harmful because it activates the process of tuber germination, after which the vegetable loses most of its nutritional and flavoring qualities.

Where to store potatoes?

The ideal place to store potatoes is in a cool, dark, and dry basement (cellar) with access to clean air and temperatures below 10 °C.

Tip: To keep potatoes longer, do not wash them.
