Watermelon season is in full swing. However, the juicy summer treat can stain clothes, carpet and upholstery. These stains are caused by tannins, the organic coloring agents that give watermelon its red color.

The first sign that there may be problems with washing is a change in the color of the stain: it turns yellow-brown instead of pink. Experts tell you how to remove watermelon stains from any fabric

How to remove watermelon stains from clothes

  • Wipe off the liquid with a paper towel or napkin. Be careful not to rub the stain deeper into the fibers.
  • Blot the stain with a cloth or paper towel dipped in cool water.
  • Then place the garment under a faucet running cold water. Let the water drain through the bottom of the material to force the watermelon juice out of the fibers.
  • Use an enzyme-based stain remover or apply a little liquid detergent directly to the stain. Wait at least 10 minutes.
  • Wash according to the recommendations on the fabric care label.

How to remove watermelon stains from carpets and upholstery

  • Remove the watermelon pieces, then use a cotton cloth or paper towel to blot up as much of the liquid as possible.
  • Mix 2 teaspoons of dishwashing detergent with 2 cups of warm water in a small container.
  • Dampen a cloth, sponge, or soft-bristled brush with the solution and apply the cleaner without soaking it deep into the fibers, otherwise mold will appear, especially on cushions.
  • Continue to blot the stain from the outside in until the stain disappears.
  • Once the cloth is wet, rinse the cleaned area and pat dry with a dry towel.
  • Dry the upholstery or carpet with a hairdryer to lift the fibers.

Additional tips

Use oxygen bleach for dried stains on carpet or upholstery. Diluted white vinegar or lemon can also help remove fruit juice stains, including watermelon.

The sooner you treat the stain, the better. High temperatures can harden the stain and make it permanent. Do not rub the dirt, otherwise it will penetrate deeper into the fibers and it will be more difficult to wash.
