How to check a car before buying: main points

Yulia PoteriankoNews
A thorough car check is the key to a successful purchase

Not only the used car market in Ukraine is not shrinking because of the war, but it also remains stable, although Ukrainians are more likely to buy cheaper used cars. This is not a bad idea, as it allows you to save money. However, you need to know how to choose a used car so that it is in good condition and the purchase is justified.

OBOZREATEL has collected some tips on how to check a car before buying. They will help you identify hidden flaws that are not obvious but can turn into trouble in the future. Here's what you should do to avoid this.

  • Thoroughly inspect the vehicle exterior for scratches, bumps, rust, and other mechanical damage.
  • Check the condition of the tires. They should be intact, free of cracks, and the treads on all wheels should have sufficient depth and be worn evenly.
  • Look into all the compartments for technical fluids - oil, brake fluid, coolant. A responsible seller fills them before handing the car over to the buyer.
  • Make sure that the light and sound alarms are in good condition. Headlights, turn signals, brake lights - everything must work.
  • The electrical system must also be working. Here you need to check the battery, audio system and other components.
  • The engine check should include, among other things, a test of the exhaust system, namely the presence or absence of extraneous sounds during operation and smoke from the exhaust pipe.
  • The brake system, including pads and disks, should also be inspected. They must be in good condition and operate without problems.
  • Seat belts and airbags should also be inspected and tested.
  • Experts do not advise buying a car without a test drive. You need to feel how the car drives and understand whether you will feel comfortable at the wheel.
  • Before making a choice, ask the previous owner for documents about the full history of car maintenance and repair. Make sure it hasn't undergone a major restoration and has been well cared for. Also, check all the information about the previous owners, find out the details about the condition of the car's documents and the cost of its insurance and maintenance.

Bonus tip - if you do not have your own experience in checking a car, you can always invite a professional mechanic to help you with all the nuances.
