Honda and Nissan merger: what will happen to low-cost models of Japanese companies
Information about the upcoming merger of Honda and Nissan into one corporation surprised many people. But the second automaker actually needs a rescue now. And such a scenario is not the worst option against the backdrop of, for example, a Chinese purchase. This hints at a new future for the two companies' low-cost models.
As OBOZ.UA reminds, Honda and Nissan have already announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding. In fact, they have consolidated cooperation with the prospect of further merger into a larger company.
Mitsubishi (which, along with Nissan, is in an alliance with Renault) has also joined, but so far in an observational role. Nevertheless, what is at stake is the emergence of the largest automotive concern after Toyota and the VW Group.
It is known that three Japanese manufacturers will develop new cars on common platforms and units. That is, the new Honda CR-V, Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander are likely to be technically very similar vehicles. But they will probably differ in design and interior decoration.
The same applies to the compact crossovers Nissan Qashqai, Honda ZR-V (HR-V) and Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross. As well as Honda Civic, Nissan Sentra and Mitsubishi Lancer.
And against the background of the current interest of Japanese automakers in sports cars of the middle segment, you can even think about the return of the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution, the production of which stopped in 2015.
