Frit – black dots on a car windshield: what they protect against
If you've ever looked at the edge of a car windshield, you've probably noticed a pattern of black dots arranged in a certain order. This is not done for beauty. Black dots, or frites, are an important safety element and a guarantee of vehicle durability.
OBOZ. UA tells what are frites and how they protect the car.
Why do you need frites?
Black dots (frit) on the windshield are part of the ceramic layer that is applied to the glass during the production process. They are usually located at the edges of the glass and form a pattern known as a "dot matrix."
The main function of this "matrix" is to evenly distribute the temperature. Without them, the solid black stripe would heat up much faster than the rest of the glass, which would eventually lead to its deformation or cracking.
The "pattern" of dots helps to distribute the heat, preventing such problems.
Additional functions of the frit
The frit also protects the adhesive that holds the windshield to the vehicle frame. Exposure to heat or UV light can weaken the adhesive, but the black dots reduce this risk, ensuring a secure grip.
In addition, they create a rough surface, which also improves the adhesive's properties and makes the glass-frame connection stronger.
