Forget about spring seedlings: how to winter-sow tomatoes
Tomatoes are considered to be a sunny summer fruit that needs a lot of warmth and cultivation through seedlings to take root in the garden and produce a harvest. Meanwhile, experienced gardeners claim that they can be sown quite successfully in winter.
Experts told us how to do it right. They gave step-by-step instructions on how to carry out all the necessary work.
The holes should be dug in late October or early November - be guided by the moment when the first frost hits. The depth of the holes should be 15-20 cm.
One ripe tomato fruit should be placed in each such hole. Cover it with soil and tamp it down lightly. About 10 cm should remain from the top of the fruit to the surface of the soil.
It is very important to cover the crops. To protect them from the cold, at least 10-15 cm of dry leaves are placed on top. A box is also placed over the hole to prevent the mulch from being swept away by the wind.
In the spring, when the soil warms up, the leaf cover should be removed. Several tomato seeds will germinate under the influence of heat. You need to treat them like seedlings, namely protect them from frost.
When the seedlings grow up, they are dug up and distributed among the beds. Those who have tried this method claim that tomatoes grown in this way are more hardy.
