Do not wake the hedgehogs! Gardeners warned to be careful when working after winter

ObozrevatelNews

During February, hedgehogs usually hibernate in their nests to conserve energy and survive the winter. This resting period lasts until March or April, so it is important not to disturb them.

Common hibernation sites for hedgehogs include compost heaps, piles of logs and leaves, under hedges, specially designed hedgehog houses, and tree hollows. If you find hibernating hedgehogs or a family of dormice, it's best to just leave them alone, as these creatures are looking for quiet, serene places to spend the cold months, OBOZ.UA writes.

To hibernate, their heartbeat slows down, as does their breathing. Their body temperature also drops, which ultimately allows them to use less energy.

Hedgehogs usually come out of hibernation in March or April, but the exact time depends on the weather.

This process can take several hours or even days and may cause them to appear disoriented for a short time as they adjust to activity again.

Try not to disturb natural hibernation sites, especially if you are vigorously cleaning up after a long winter. In spring, hedgehogs begin to come out of hibernation very slowly, they are sluggish and weak - remember about them.
