Chance of survival is very low: a unique family of penguins with three chicks was photographed near Vernadsky research base
A unique family of penguins was photographed near the Vernadsky Antarctic station. Three chicks are growing up in it at once.
This number of kids is quite a rare occurrence for sub-Antarctic penguins. Usually, they lay two eggs. Sometimes there can be three, but the chance of survival of all the babies is very low, according to the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Research Center.
The main reason for the failure to survive is the difficulty of feeding three babies at the same time. However, these penguins in the photo are lucky. Their parents managed to cope with a difficult mission – the chicks are already quite old, they are about three weeks old.
The biologist of the 29th Ukrainian Antarctic Expedition noted that this family is the only one on Galindez Island, although there are about two thousand penguins in total, and about 4 thousand adult penguins.
The task of biologists is to observe Antarctic birds in the context of climate change because their migration is one of the largest indicators of warming in the Antarctic.
