The Disciplinary Council of the Belgian Football Championship has decided to replay the Anderlecht vs Genk match due to a referee's mistake. The match of the 19th round of the national championship took place on December 23 last year and ended with a score of 2:1 in favor of the hosts.
In the 23rd minute, the guests missed a penalty kick, and then the referee canceled the goal scored by the players during the finish. "Genk appealed against the VAR decision, which did not allow them to overturn the missed penalty.
The replay clearly showed that the Anderlecht player ran into the penalty area before the kick.
"The Disciplinary Council overturned the earlier decision of the Professional Refereeing Department not to replay the match. The Board accepted Genk's argument that the match officials had misapplied the rules at the penalty shootout. "Genk hopes that a date for the replay will be found in the near future," the team's press service said in a statement.
