In the Atacama Desert, which is located on the Pacific coast of South America, a green ray was spotted. This is a rare optical phenomenon that appears when the solar disk disappears behind the horizon or appears from behind the horizon.
The research organization The SETI Institute published a photo on the social network X, where the green ray is visible. This unique phenomenon can be seen only under favorable weather conditions, a flat horizon, no clouds and no wind (to see the photo, scroll down to the end of the news).
The green ray lasts only a few seconds. It is usually seen at sea or at the end of the polar night when the Sun does not fully rise.
Interestingly, the same effect can be observed during the moonrise and moonset. And this is exactly what the research organization recorded.

According to an ancient maritime belief, the green ray is a symbol of hope and good luck, and a sailor who sees it will have a happy voyage.
