A popular power tool that resembles an electric saw with a circular blade is called an angle grinder. It is designed for cutting and grinding metal, stone, and other hard materials.

It is the most versatile tool that has been used for many decades, but even now, few people call it by its full name. The term "grinder" has stuck with the people. OBOZ.UA investigated the origin of this name and whether it is connected with Bulgaria.

Angle grinders began to be manufactured by Ackermann + Schmitt in Germany in 1954. The tool quickly became popular and proved to be a high-quality, reliable, and highly efficient electrical appliance.

The first angle grinders appeared in the USSR in the 1970s, and production was launched in Bulgaria. Craftsmen and builders quickly named the tool after the place of manufacture, and the name spread throughout the former USSR.

"Bulgarian" has become synonymous with an angle grinder, and to this day, craftsmen often use this term to refer to the power tool.

Angle grinders are used not only for polishing and grinding surfaces. The cutting blade makes it easy to cut very hard materials, such as bricks, ceramic tiles, or stone. This power tool is also useful for removing imperfections, such as cleaning welds or removing rust. The wire brush is used for the initial cleaning of metal surfaces.
