Where did the black lump on top of the banana come from: can you eat it

Botany is not as simple a science as it seems to non-specialists. For example, according to botanical classification, a banana is a berry, while a strawberry is not. No less interesting is what scientists consider a small black lump on the tip of a tropical fruit to be.
As the publication IFL Science writes, non-experts often call it seeds. However, the seeds of the banana are arranged quite differently.
It is not easy to see them. After all, most of the bananas that are now sold in stores and markets are of the Cavendish variety, which, as a rule, does not produce seeds.
If you consider the fruits of other varieties of this plant, then the seeds can be noticed in the thickness of their pulp. It is enough to simply cut the banana lengthwise and look closely at the long line in the center, going through the entire fruit - it is she who contains them.
And the mound at the tip is the remains of the flower from which the fruit (or rather berry) grew. Bananas grow in bunches on trees, and the short end is actually the top of the fruit and the hard stem is the bottom. Many people eat bananas by first breaking off the stalk, for them the lump, like the rest of the flower, is often a surprise.
This lump is tougher than the rest of the fruit and has a bitter taste, so not everyone dares to eat it. But scientists say that it poses no danger to health and is edible. So whether to eat it or not is a matter of personal taste.
