If you want to have fresh vegetables and herbs early in the new season, you can achieve that by planting them in a greenhouse. In this case, the first harvest can be obtained as early as May. However, you need to know which crops can provide an early yield.

OBOZREVATEL provides information about such crops and how to grow them properly.

What to plant for an early harvest

  • Lettuce
  • Watercress
  • Spinach
  • Arugula
  • Parsley
  • Dill
  • Leaf mustard
  • Radish
  • White cabbage seedlings

How to plant early crops in a greenhouse

You can start sowing as early as the first half of April if night frosts have ceased by then.

Pre-germinate the seeds so that the plants can start developing immediately in the soil. Soak the seeds in room temperature water for two hours, then place them on gauze or paper towels in a warm place until they sprout.

Maintain a temperature of 5-8 degrees in the greenhouse until the first sprouts appear.

Water the plants with warm water, as cold water can harm the crop.

In the early stages of plant development, fertilize them by adding manure, potash, and phosphorus fertilizers to the soil.

Plant seeds in shallow furrows in the greenhouse, up to 3 cm deep. Space the seeds about 30 cm apart. Cover the furrows with peat and foil to expedite the ripening of the first crop.

If all growing conditions are met, the first harvest of greens can be obtained within three weeks from the time of sowing.
