Niunia in Ukraine is a person who tends to complain and cry

The habit of some people to complain and cry a lot at the slightest occasion was characteristic enough to become the basis for a nickname that later turned into a surname. One example of such a surname is Niunko.

A small study about it was published on the website of the town of Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi region. It is here that most people with the surname Niunko live. It is based on the word "niunia", which means a person prone to complaining and breaking down in tears, i.e., to whine.

Most likely, the suffix -ko here meant a diminutive form rather than indicating the descendants of a person. That is, a person with such a character trait was treated leniently, though somewhat arrogantly, and called a small child

According to the database of the Ridni genealogical society, this surname is 31,066th most common in Ukraine. In total, 151 people in our country have it. In Shepetivka, 20 of these people are registered. That is, one of the 719 residents of the city is Niunko.

Another 16 people who have this surname in their passports live in Velyka Rishnivka, Shepetivka district, and there are 15 in the village of Khrolyn. Nine are registered in Lviv and six in the village of Sukhopolova, Pryluky district, Chernihiv region.

Most often, the male name Oleksandr and the female name Liudmyla are combined with the surname Niunko.
