There is a so-called "watch etiquette" in the world, which determines on which hand an accessory should be worn. Watches are now used not only for their intended purpose, but also to show their status.

Usually, the choice of the hand for the watch is associated not with gender, but with certain conditions: on the left hand accessory is usually worn because 85% of the population - right-handed. OBOZREVATEL looked into the rules of "watch etiquette".

Why watches are usually worn on the left hand

If you are right-handed, it is inconvenient to burden your working hand with unnecessary accessories. In addition, it is more convenient to fasten watch straps with the right hand on the left. A similar explanation applies to the need to wind mechanical watches - in classic models, the mechanism is built on the right side.

On which hand should the watch be worn by men

Despite the general rule about the left hand, some men prefer to wear a watch on their right hand. There is a logic in it, especially if the accessory is expensive and of status: this way it is sure to be noticed during a handshake.

There are also some important etiquette rules:

  • a watch should not be worn over the cuff of a shirt;
  • between the wrist and the strap should easily pass the finger, so do not tighten the accessory too tightly;
  • the buckle can be matched to the color of your shoes, and the cufflinks can be matched to the color of the watch;
  • the classic model has a diameter of 34-50 mm.

Etiquette for women

Women can wear a watch on any hand. You can even choose a bracelet watch for both.

If a woman adheres to the official business style, the watch should be worn on the left hand.
