How to grow the perfect winter onion

In the fall, after the harvest, the owners begin to prepare for new gardening work. One of the most popular crops that can withstand frost and cold temperatures is winter onions. Although it is not whimsical to care for, it is still necessary to provide favorable conditions for its growth and development.

OBOZ.UA has found effective tips that will help you cope with this. A good harvest is influenced by the place, time of planting, and size of the fruit.

Onions

First of all, the owners pay attention to which variety to choose for planting. But you also need to keep in mind the size of the planting material. The onions should be small, no more than one centimeter, which will allow you to get a bountiful harvest next season.

Time

The best time to plant is from mid-October to early November, but it all depends on the weather conditions. The main thing is to plant the onions 14 days before stable frosts. You shouldn't plant the crop too early either, because warm weather promotes sprout growth, and they won't withstand sudden temperature fluctuations.

Location

Choose a site with fertile soil, best of all, plant in the place where green manure, legumes, pumpkins, tomatoes, and cucumbers have been grown. But avoid beds with predecessors such as garlic and onions.

If the soil is depleted, apply organic and mineral fertilizers in advance. And during planting, you can sprinkle ash on the beds.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA told you how you can fertilize the garden besides manure to get a bountiful harvest.
