How often should you wash your bedding to get rid of bacteria: experts' answer
Imagine this: we spend more time in bed than at our workplace, especially on days off when we need to ensure we get enough sleep. This underscores the crucial importance of keeping our bedding hygienic and safe. But how frequently should you change your bedding to ensure a sufficient level of hygiene?
According to experts cited by the Express, it is generally recommended to change bedding once a week, and even more frequently for certain individuals. This is particularly true for those with pets, allergies, or asthma. People dealing with a cold should pay extra attention to washing their pillowcases more frequently.
The reason behind this advice lies in the presence of germs, bed bugs, and dust mites that thrive in bedding. During sleep, we inadvertently spread microorganisms through saliva or skin particles, providing an ideal environment for these entities to flourish.
For individuals with respiratory tract infections, experts suggest washing pillowcases every 72 hours, with sheets changed just as often. It's essential to use hot water and add antibacterial agents such as bleach or hydrogen peroxide during washing. Whenever possible, drying items in the sun is recommended, as ultraviolet light effectively kills various types of infections.
To maintain a fresh bed for an extended period, experts also advise against eating in bed and keeping animals out of the sleeping area.
