How often should you wash jeans: experts answer a common question

It's hard to imagine a modern wardrobe without jeans - they are so versatile that they have become an integral part of many styles. Denim, a special twill-weave fabric, was invented 150 years ago in the French city of Nîmes (the name means "from Nîmes"). However, as early as the fourth century, the French sewed sails for ships from a similar dense fabric, and it was from this twill that the sails on Columbus's ships were made.

Nowadays, denim is most often used to make jeans. There is still a debate among manufacturers, designers, and ordinary users about whether jeans should be washed. The New York Post's experts analyzed whether denim deteriorates from frequent washing.

Levi's design director Paul O'Neill said: "While many people prefer to never wash their jeans, I wash them after every 30 to 50 wears."

The expert recommends washing jeans on a delicate cycle with cold water to prevent the color from fading.

"The more you wash your denim, the lighter it gets, losing quality with each wash," O'Neill emphasized.

However, he explained that the frequency of washing jeans depends on personal preference.

Instead of washing their jeans, some people find other ways to freshen them up, such as putting them in the freezer, spraying them with vinegar, or hanging them in the sun to kill bacteria.

Mary Lou Ryan, co-founder of the clothing brand Bassike, said that she only washes jeans when it is "vital, with a little mild detergent."

It is better to turn the jeans inside out before washing to protect the outer fibers.

Some experts note that it is really better not to machine wash jeans at all but simply soak them in cold water and dry them in the fresh air.
