The world's largest captive crocodile dies: what it looked like
The world's largest crocodile, Cassius, who lived in captivity in the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat wildlife sanctuary off the coast of Queensland, has died in Australia. The reptile was brought to its territory in the 1980s.
According to the BBC, the reptile's body length was about 5.5 meters and its weight was almost one ton. In 2011, it entered the Guinness Book of Records as the largest crocodile kept in captivity.
The sanctuary's website noted that they were very saddened by the loss of Cassius, as he had become "a full-fledged member of their family." Employees of the Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat noted that the reptile lived for at least 110 years, which is incredibly long for its species.
Before coming to the reserve, Cassius lived in the wild. It often hunted local livestock and attacked boats. In 1987, the owner of Marineland Melanesia Crocodile Habitat, George Craig, bought the crocodile. According to the staff, the man became his "best friend."
Representatives of the sanctuary added that Cassius's condition began to deteriorate markedly after Craig moved to another city. The reptile began to get very sick and died soon.
