The cult French director Bertrand Blier has died
At the age of 85, the life of the legendary French director Bertrand Blier was cut short. He made an invaluable contribution to the film industry by creating such films as "Buffet Froid," "Menage," "Going Places," and many others.
According to France 24, citing the words of the cultural figure's son, he passed away in his own home. The artist spent his last moments surrounded by his wife and children.
"It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of Bertrand Blier. He was a brilliant writer of dialogues, in the tradition of Prevert and Odiard," said Rachida Dati, the French Minister of Culture, "In his timeless films, he gave iconic roles to some of the world's best actors: Jean-Pierre Marielle, Gérard Depardieu, Miou-Miou, Michel Blanc, Isabelle Huppert, Patrick Dewaere, Josiane Balasko, not to mention his own father. Bertrand Blier was a great director, a passionate supporter of creative freedom."
The cultural activist was born on March 14, 1939 in the Parisian suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt. From a very young age, he was interested in cinema, so he became known in the industry for his non-conformist approach to directing and for covering unconventional topics in his projects.
In 1963, Bertrand Blier made the film Hitler? I Don't Know Him", which was the beginning of his successful career. The director achieved his greatest popularity in 1974 when his work "Going Places" was released. This project played an important role not only for the artist but also for several famous actors, including Gerard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere, and Miou-Miou. The film became a real sensation at the time, as Bertrand Blier used quite sharp humor in it.
In 1979, the director won his first Oscar for the film "Get Out Your Handkerchiefs." His project "Too Beautiful for You" won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as three awards at the French Cesar Awards.
