Number of women in film industry reaches lowest level since 2007: trend worsens
In 2023, women accounted for only 30% of the main characters in films. This is 14% less than in 2022, so researchers emphasize a disappointing trend: women on and off screen are underrepresented in the film industry. A great example was the sensational movie Barbie, where, despite the feminist story about the main character, the focus was on Ken and his song.
According to the USC Annenberg Inclusive Initiative's annual study, which analyzed 1,700 films, only 32% of the 5,084 speaking characters in the top films of 2023 were girls or women, while 68.2% were men and less than 1% were non-binary. The number of female roles fell to the lowest percentage since 2007. The number of female directors, composers, screenwriters and producers has also remained unchanged since 2022, Deadline writes.
The report also found that only 11% of the top 100 films of 2023 were gender-balanced. "2023 was not the 'year of the women'. We continue to report the same trends for girls and women on screen year after year," said Annenberg Inclusion Initiative Chair Dr. Stacy L. Smith, "It's clear that producers are either abandoning women as viewers, or they don't want to find ways to make meaningful change, or both. If the industry is to survive today, it must do something about its failure to adequately represent exactly half of the world's population on screen."
