The legendary American director David Lynch, author of the cult series Twin Peaks, passed away at the age of 78 on January 16. The world-famous artist spent the last months of his life in his home, as he suffered from a complex lung disease that left him lacking oxygen even for short walks.
According to CNN, the tragic news was reported by the director's relatives on his Facebook page. Despite the fact that the star shared information about his health with his fans openly, his relatives, who are heartbroken over the loss, decided not to name the reason for the director's passing.

However, it is known that in 2020, David Lynch was diagnosed with a complex disease called pulmonary emphysema. The 1984 Dune director openly admitted that the disease arose because he had been a lifelong smoker. Still, even such a terrible diagnosis did not immediately convinced the artist to give up his bad habit. He quit smoking only in 2022.
"I have to say that I enjoyed smoking very much, and I do love tobacco - the smell of it, lighting cigarettes on fire, smoking them - but there is a price to pay for this enjoyment, and the price for me is emphysema," the star said.

The possibility of contracting COVID-19 posed even a greater risk to the artist's life, so he had to give up walking and shut off from the world. It's worth noting that even his creative work was done online - he directed some projects from home.
Emphysema (a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)) is a lung disease usually caused by smoking, polluted air, and exposure to dust and chemicals. During the disease, the organ increases in volume, becoming sluggish, and the airways narrow. This makes it much harder to exhale air.
