US State Department announces "announcement" on Ukraine's path to NATO at the summit in Washington

The United States is convinced that Ukraine will become a NATO member in the future. And the path to membership must be clear and understandable for the Ukrainian government.

From this point of view, the United States is preparing an "announcement" to be made at the NATO anniversary summit to be held in mid-July in Washington. This was stated by State Department spokesman Matthew Miller in an interview with Voice of America.

He emphasized the importance of Ukraine knowing exactly what it needs to do and achieve to join the Alliance. At the 75th anniversary summit of NATO leaders to be held on July 9-11, 2024, in Washington, D.C., the United States will make a certain "announcement" in this regard

"We need to clearly understand what the path for Ukrainians looks like. It should be clear to the Ukrainian government what needs to be achieved. And we will continue to work on it. Of course, we will have an announcement on this when we get to the Washington summit itself," Miller said.

Miller refused to make any predictions about what the NATO heads of state might announce at the meeting, reminding that decisions in the Alliance are made by all 32 members.

"On behalf of the United States, I will say that we have been very clear that Ukraine's future is in NATO, and other NATO member states have also been very clear that Ukraine's future is in NATO. And what the Secretary of State wanted to say to the Ukrainians when he was in Kyiv is that we do see a bridge from here to there. We believe that this bridge should be well-lit," added the spokesman.

Earlier, U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken promised "tangible steps" at the Washington summit in July to bring Ukraine closer to joining NATO. According to him, these "tangible steps" will be aimed at strengthening the Alliance's role in building sustainable and capable forces in Ukraine and implementing the necessary reforms that will integrate Ukraine into the Alliance.
