"This would be a strengthening of NATO": Lithuania demands specifics on Ukraine's accession to the Alliance

Lithuanian leader Gitanas Nausėda remains a strong supporter of Ukraine's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance. As the next NATO summit in Vilnius approaches, he called on NATO allies to develop and provide Kyiv with concrete mechanisms on this path.

The president's words were reported by the Lithuanian news agency Delfi. Nausėda believes that NATO members should stop making hackneyed promises to the Ukrainian people and reject the mental belief that NATO enlargement at the expense of Ukraine will become a burden for them.

"Instead of repeating hackneyed phrases about NATO's open doors, we need to find more concrete mechanisms for Ukraine's rapid integration. The Ukrainian army today has such experience and has been baptised on the battlefield that no other European armed forces have," the Lithuanian president said.

Moreover, Nausėda added that Ukraine's inclusion in the North Atlantic Alliance would strengthen the latter significantly. Therefore, the Alliance should facilitate this membership.

Recall that Kyiv expects NATO to take concrete steps to implement Ukraine's accession to the bloc at the next summit in Vilnius.

"What steps do we expect? Steps forward. Exactly steps. And very specific ones. We would like to understand for ourselves, for our state, for our society that Ukraine will be in NATO. We have started talking about this with the Secretary General. We need something more than the format of our relations that we have today," President Zelenskyy said.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg had repeatedly stated that a substantive conversation about Ukraine's accession to NATO would take place immediately after the end of the war with Russia. Our country is capable of meeting all the standards of an Alliance member, provided that it fully restores its sovereignty.

In addition, he stressed the readiness of NATO partners to develop a plan for long-term support for Ukraine. The programme should enhance our country's defence capabilities, strengthen the Armed Forces and help us switch from Soviet military equipment to NATO equipment.
