"Let's be honest": Kellogg says Ukraine's chances of returning nuclear weapons are somewhere "between minimal and zero"

Oleksiy LutykovPolitics

US Special Representative for Russia and Ukraine Keith Kellogg has said that Kyiv's chances of regaining its nuclear arsenal are close to zero. In his opinion, Ukraine is unlikely to ever become a member of the "nuclear club" again.

Kellogg emphasized that the United States would not support the return of nuclear weapons to Ukraine because the country is now governed by a "common sense government." He said this on Fox News.

Kellogg made it clear that Kyiv's chances of regaining nuclear weapons as an alternative to NATO membership, as President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously said, are close to zero.

"The probability that they will get their nuclear weapons back is somewhere between minimal and zero. Let's be honest, we both know that's not going to happen," the US special envoy said.

He also added that rearming Ukraine with nuclear weapons is a doomed idea. Kellogg explained that the United States is guided by common sense in this matter.

"Remember, the president said we are a common sense government. When someone says something like that, look at the result or the potential. It's using your common sense," Kellogg said.

It is noteworthy that in 1994, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine voluntarily handed over its nuclear weapons to Russia. As part of the so-called Budapest Memorandum, our country was supposed to receive guarantees from the Russian Federation, the United States, and the United Kingdom that its sovereignty and independence would be respected in exchange for nuclear weapons.

As a reminder, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his position on security guarantees for Ukraine if NATO membership becomes impossible. According to him, if the United States is not ready to support Ukraine in its quest to become a NATO member, the country should be provided with alternative means of defense, including nuclear weapons.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov reacted to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's words about nuclear weapons. The Kremlin called Ukraine's desire to revive its nuclear potential "madness."
