Fico says he will block Ukraine's accession to NATO and talks about the threat of World War III

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has said that he intends to block Ukraine's accession to NATO. According to him, the expansion of the North Atlantic Alliance could allegedly lead to the outbreak of World War III.

Fico promised that, while in power, he would do everything to prevent Ukraine from becoming part of NATO. He said this in an interview with the STVR TV channel, according to the Slovak edition of Pravda.

The head of the Slovak government actually repeated the Kremlin's narratives, saying that Ukraine's possible accession to the Alliance could threaten the outbreak of World War III. The politician also promised to block Ukraine's accession to NATO while he is in power.

"As long as I am the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, I will encourage the deputies over whom I have political control as the head of the party to never agree to Ukraine's membership in NATO," Fico said.

He added that he was not against Ukraine's accession to the European Union. It is worth noting that Fico made these statements after recent statements about the need to restore relations with Russia. The politician said that if the war in Ukraine ends during the mandate of the current Slovak government, i.e. by 2027, he intends to do everything to restore "economic and normal" relations between the EU and Russia.

As a reminder, the meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense is expected to take concrete steps toward Ukraine's membership in NATO. The event will take place next week in Germany at the initiative of US President Joe Biden.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Financial Times described a hypothetical scenario after the end of the hot phase of the war in Ukraine – with territorial concessions and security guarantees. It noted that the allies allegedly offered Kyiv a "partial" accession to NATO based on the West German model.
