Europe will look up to the United States: an expert explains how the arms market will develop in the coming years
Currently, Ukraine produces 40% of the weapons it needs, with Europe providing 30% and the United States another 30%. Therefore, the level of dependence on the United States has decreased compared to 2022, but we cannot get rid of it completely.
While Europe is ready to do more for Ukraine, it still relies on the United States. It is difficult for European countries to catch up and do their best to provide for Kyiv themselves. This was stated by Oleksandr Kraev, an expert at the Foreign Policy Council "Ukrainian Prism", in the OBOZ.Talk program.
"That is, no matter what the Europeans in London offer - more weapons, peacekeepers, or a new security pact. Each time, these phrases ended with them saying that we still can't do it without the United States at this stage. Without the United States, we are not yet able to act independently, because these processes simply take time. During this certain time, the United States should give us the opportunity to carry out these reforms, changes, and so on, so that we do not fall victim to Russian aggression," he said.
Three years after the outbreak of a full-scale war in Ukraine, major European arms manufacturers and the entire European business community have prepared themselves for a militarized world, where armies will grow, security will be a more important topic, and politicians will be more pro-military.
"Now European politicians will not be able to reverse this course, because it is no longer political will or courage that requires it, it is economic circumstances that require it. European business has begun to adapt to the new security realities," the expert said.
According to him, now any politicians who want to maintain their popularity and be re-elected will have to support Ukraine and create a common European army, invest in defense, in particular in the defense industry, because it is, first of all, a very profitable business.
As a reminder, French President Emmanuel Macron has called for significant investments in European defense. He said that military spending should be set at around 3.3.5% of GDP. The French leader intends to make this issue a key one at the extraordinary European summit scheduled for March 6.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, former NATO Commander General Richard Shirreff said that even if Ukraine loses US support, the situation will not be hopeless for Kyiv due to the depletion of Russia's military potential. However, Europe should no longer count on the United States as an ally to resolve the war in Ukraine.
