British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrives in Ukraine to sign agreement on centennial partnership
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer arrived in Ukraine on Thursday, January 16, with a promise to help secure the country for a century. He and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will sign a 100-year partnership agreement in Kyiv.
The document covers areas such as defense, science, energy, and trade. This was reported by the Associated Press, citing information from the British government.
It is noted that Starmer's unannounced visit is his first trip to Ukraine since taking office in July 2024. Although he already visited the country in 2023, when he was the leader of the opposition. The politician has also held talks with the Ukrainian leader twice since becoming prime minister.
Earlier, the media announced that Starmer would make his first official visit to Ukraine in the coming weeks to discuss the possibility of deploying an international peacekeeping force after Russia's war ends. Bloomberg wrote that on January 10, he met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the British prime ministers' country residence in Chequers, and the situation in Ukraine was at the center of their dialogue.
Now it is reported that the two sides are discussing the idea of sending British and French troops to Ukraine as part of a peacekeeping mission that could take place after a possible peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Presidential Office explained that Ukraine and Britain have reached the final stage of negotiations on signing a "centennial agreement" on the transition to a deeper partnership. The negotiations are continuing within the framework of the agreements reached during a telephone conversation between Zelenskyy and Starmer on December 23, 2024.
