Blinken arrives in China: will talk about war in Ukraine and other "real problems"
United States Secretary of State Anthony Blinken arrived in China on Sunday, June 18, on a working visit. There he will speak in particular about the war unleashed by Russia in Ukraine.
This is reported by CNN. Blinken will also discuss other "real problems" with Chinese officials.
Both Chinese and U.S. governments have expressed low expectations for the secretary of state's visit to Beijing, but Blinken promised to express "very real U.S. concerns on a number of issues," including the war in Ukraine.
Note that China had previously published its vaguely worded position on a "political settlement" of the conflict. The country was criticized for not calling on Russia to withdraw its troops from Ukraine, as Kiev and more than 100 governments around the world have repeatedly done.
"Before his visit Saturday, Blinken spoke separately by telephone with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin. A U.S. State Department spokesman said Blinken discussed regional priorities with both leaders and also reiterated each country's unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty," the report said.
Overall, this visit by Blinken to China is designed to get relations between the countries back on track after months of heightened tensions between them.
"According to a senior State Department official, Blinken's main goal in China is to restore channels of communication, especially direct communication between the military, between Washington and Beijing," CNN wrote.
Earlier OBOZREVATEL wrote that Anthony Blinken is preparing for a visit to China to meet with officials. Blinken's working trip will last from June 18 to 19.
