Rules for storing carrots in winter

Easy-to-grow carrots can cause a lot of trouble during storage. Root crops often spoil and rot. In addition, there is a high risk of fungal diseases.

You should follow simple but important rules for storing carrots. Read the OBOZREVATEL article on how to protect carrots from diseases and what place to choose for wintering.

Rule 1

First of all, it is important to harvest carrots correctly. Root crops should be thoroughly dried in the fresh air and only then start preparing for storage. Excessive moisture is the main cause of rot and fungal spores.

Rule 2

Five simple steps will help extend the shelf life of carrots.

  1. Cut off the tops.
  2. Remove the thin tips of the roots.
  3. Clean the carrots from the ground.
  4. Check for any damage or pests.
  5. Move the carrots to a cool place.

Rule 3

For 7-10 days after harvesting, carrots should be kept in a cool room with an air temperature of +10 +14 °C. Only then are the roots transferred to the cellar or basement.

Rule 4

The humidity in the room where the carrots will be stored in winter should be 90-95%, and the temperature should be -2...+2 °C.

It is important to ensure air circulation and medium ventilation.

Rule 5

Sand will prevent carrots from wilting and even prevent the development of rot. Pour slightly damp sand into a box with a layer of 3-5 cm and put the carrots on top.

Thick bags or plastic sacks are also suitable for storage. They should be filled with carrots and kept unopened in a cool room.

Onion peel will protect the carrots from rot. Put carrots and onion peel in layers in the boxes and place the containers in the cellar or basement.

A balcony is also suitable for storage, but you will have to constantly monitor the temperature. A temperature slightly above 0 °C is acceptable, and in case of a slight frost, you should fill the boxes with sawdust or onion husks and cover them with a blanket.
