What passwords should not be put on bank cards: common options

Alina MilsentLife
Some PIN combinations are very easy to guess

The simpler the PIN code on a bank card, the higher the chance that it can be used by thieves. Debit card fraud doesn't only happen when criminals get access to the card number, it's also very common to use the PIN.

Experts do not recommend putting some passwords on bank cards. For example, according to statistics, 20% of the codes cracked by thieves began with "19". Sante Plus has analysed which PIN code is easily guessed by intruders.

Which PIN codes are the most dangerous

Meta employee Nick Berry noted that the probability that a thief will guess your code is very low, as there are more than 10 thousand variants of the four-digit code. However, in practice, many people use too simple codes, such as birth dates.

It is recommended not to use such codes:

  • 1234
  • 1111
  • 0000
  • 1212
  • 7777
  • 1004
  • 2000
  • 4444
  • 2222
  • 6969
  • 2580

How to choose a PIN code

According to statistics, some combinations are not used often, so thieves are less likely to guess them.

For example:

  • 7063
  • 6093
  • 6827
  • 7394
  • 0859
  • 8957
  • 9480
  • 6793
  • 8398
  • 0738
  • 7637
  • 6835
  • 9629
  • 8093
  • 8068

The expert once again stressed that you should never write down your PIN in a place easily accessible to thieves (for example, keep a piece of paper with the code in your wallet) and tell it to strangers.

How to understand if someone has accessed your card

You notice small, strange charges on your account

Boston-based security analyst Robert Siciliano notes: "Once a thief has access to your bank card, they will withdraw a small amount that may not raise any alarms. It could be a few euros."

You need to act quickly. As long as the card is not blocked, the thief will quickly move on to larger amounts.

You see payments made far from your region

If you notice unexplained payments outside your city, district, region, or even neighbourhood, you may have been the victim of fraud. As soon as you suspect fraud on your card account, you should contact your bank immediately. Check online or through the bank's mobile app to see if you have a way to directly block access to your card.
