Hot water can be harmful to wood surfaces and in some other cases.

Hot water washes better. For the most part, this is true. But there is a whole list of items and dirt that are better cleaned with cold water.

Lifehacker looked through the cases when it is better to avoid cleaning with hot water and also why it can be harmful and even dangerous.

What is the difference between cleaning with cold and hot water?

Hot water is more effective at breaking down most types of dirt. For example, grease. The steam from a steam generator is also hot enough to kill germs.

But at the same time it is not suitable for protein stains, because under the influence of temperature protein curdles and the stain becomes even more persistent. In addition, some stains have the ability to spread under heat. Therefore, pre-soaking stains are always recommended to do in cold or slightly warm water.

What and when to wash with cold water?

In addition to removing stains from textiles, only cold water should be used to dilute cleaning chemicals such as bleach. High temperatures can destroy the active ingredient. In addition, the molecules will become vaporized and can cause respiratory damage.

Only cold water should be used to wash wooden floors and furniture. High temperature moisture can damage and deform the material. Hot water can also dissolve the protective coating used for wood and penetrate deeper into its thickness. Such a surface will take longer to dry and the effect on it will be stronger.

When hot washing is appropriate

With the help of high temperature, it is better to remove dried dirt and any stains that gather into a crust. For example, it is better to treat dishes, glass and plastic surfaces in this way.

You can also dilute homemade cleaning agents such as baking soda, citric acid or vinegar in hot water. Their stability will not be affected.

When water temperature doesn't matter

In some situations, water temperature is irrelevant. For example, a quick rinse of soap can be done with any available water. And for ordinary washing, when it is not a question of removing stains or disinfecting textiles with which a sick person came into contact. In this case, you can choose any temperature that you consider necessary and that is suitable for specific things. But cold water will save on electricity and will be safer for the fabric.
