If you don't take care of the overflow hole, an unpleasant strong odor can come from it

If you regularly clean your sink and its drain and the odor still persists, you're probably not taking care of the place that almost everyone forgets about. It keeps your kitchen and bathroom from flooding and needs the same care as any other plumbing fixture.

Of course, we're talking about the overflow hole. It can also stagnate water and accumulate dirt, which eventually begins to stink. OBOZ.UA figured out how to properly care for it.

Where is the overflow hole located?

An overflow hole is a hole that is located on the wall of a sink or bathtub, usually under the faucet. It is connected to the drain at the bottom of the sanitary device and its task is to limit the filling of the container with water. As soon as its level reaches the overflow hole, the water begins to flow through a hidden pipe into the sewer. Thus, the overflow protects against flooding.

Why can an unpleasant odor come from the overflow?

When you use the sink or sink, various soaps and organic particles regularly get into the overflow. Combined with warm water, this creates a favorable environment for bacteria to grow. And they, in turn, cause an unpleasant odor. That is why it is important to periodically clean this pipe as well.

How to clean the sink overflow?

A separate tool is required to clean the drain and overflow tube. This can be a bottle cleaner with a flexible rod or another long brush. It will need to be inserted into the hole and the walls of the tube will need to be worked with a forward motion. This will help to mechanically clean it from dirt. Do not forget to take out and clean the brush from time to time, as various dirt can cling to it.

Next, rinse the tube with boiling water. To do this, use a scoop made of a material that can withstand high temperatures. Insert it into the overflow hole and pour several liters of hot water through it. This will wash away any remaining debris and effectively clean the tube. However, if you have a PVC pipe or a sink made of porcelain, it is better not to use boiling water - it can damage these materials. In this case, just use hot water from the tap to rinse.

If the odor still persists, use baking soda. Pour one cup of dry detergent into the hole through the same sinkhole, and then pour a glass of hot water over it. Leave the product on for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse the tube properly. The odor should disappear completely.
