How to store garlic correctly

The ripening time of garlic depends on many factors: the level of precipitation, temperature and the characteristics of the variety. Early dug garlic will be soft, and overripe garlic will quickly deteriorate.

OBOZREVATEL has collected the best tips for storing garlic in an apartment. The main task is to provide it with the right conditions and an optimal level of humidity.

When to dig up garlic

The period for digging up winter garlic depends on the time of planting.

Early-ripening varieties are usually harvested 85-95 days after germination. Later varieties are dug up when at least 100 days after germination have passed (the average period is 100-110 days).

How to store garlic properly

First of all, you need to remember that garlic is harvested in dry weather. If it is too wet, the crop will quickly deteriorate.

Winter garlic should be stored at low temperatures. You can even put it in the fridge.

Spring garlic is less demanding and will not spoil even at temperatures of +20 °C.

Where to store garlic

The main rule for storing garlic is to keep it airtight. The harvest can be put into any containers, jars or containers.

Experienced vegetable growers advise using natural bags, but only if you choose a cool and dark storage place.

An important caveat: garlic does not tolerate excessive moisture, so make sure the place is dry.

By the way, after preliminary drying, garlic should be tied in bunches. Gardeners recommend cutting off the stems and root system a few weeks after digging. Read about these and other harvesting rules in the article.
