How to make a fruit and vegetable detergent

Store-bought fruits and vegetables should definitely be washed. Experts warn that the surface of the food may contain pathogenic microorganisms that cause intestinal diseases and stomach upsets.

Due to improper storage or transportation, E. coli, listeria bacteria, salmonella, etc. may be found on store-bought foods. Taste Of Home publication has shared a simple and safe homemade recipe for washing fruits and vegetables.

Why you should wash fruits and vegetables from the store

Unwashed fruits and vegetables should not be consumed for several reasons. In addition to pathogenic bacteria, they may contain pesticides. Producers use chemical fertilizers and pest control products when growing large quantities of produce. These chemicals can get into the body and cause many problems.

A healthy person may not feel the effects of small amounts of chemicals, but a weakened immune system, a tendency to allergies, and chronic illnesses increase the risk of adverse effects.

Simply washing fruits and vegetables with running water is sometimes not enough. Experts recommend using an environmentally friendly homemade remedy.

Recipe for a remedy for washing fruits and vegetables

Required ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup distilled white vinegar;
  • 1 cup water;
  • 1/2 tablespoon of lemon juice.

Step 1

Mix the ingredients by placing them in a spray bottle. If you need to peel a large number of fruits and vegetables at once, you should double the proportions.

Step 2

Spray the fruits and vegetables with the solution. Set them aside for a few minutes to allow the detergent to work.

Step 3

Rinse the fruits and vegetables under cool water using a soft brush, dry them with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Additional tips:

  1. Before washing, peel the onions from their husks and root remnants. Then rinse with running water.
  2. Cut out all darkened areas from cauliflower before washing.
  3. Before washing white cabbage, the upper large leaves should be removed.
  4. Greens can simply be rinsed in cool water.
  5. Before washing grapes, separate them into individual bunches, rinse under running water and wait for the liquid to drain.
  6. Pineapple should be washed using a brush. Leaves can be removed after washing.
  7. Watermelons and melons should be soaked in cold water for 30-60 minutes before consumption.
