How to easily get rid of flies in the house: smells that repel insects

Annoying flies can ruin the mood of even the best summer weather. Fortunately, you can get rid of them effectively with human-friendly scents.

That's what pest control expert Jordan Foster told the Express. According to him, room flies and fruit flies are the most common flies found in human homes. House flies are quite large - 6-8 mm long - while fruit flies are rarely larger than 4 mm. However, both of them are happy to fly to the smell of household garbage, especially food waste.

The sense of smell of these insects helps them to catch this smell at a great distance. A small amount of organic matter is enough for them to immediately appear in the house. And the reproduction of flies is facilitated by humidity. That is, any standing water in the house will cause these insects to lay eggs there. Then it will be much harder to drive them away.

However, some scents can help with this task. "The strong smell of essential oils, such as peppermint, eucalyptus, lavender and citrus, repels flies," the expert explained. He said the oils can be used in diffusers, sprays or simply leaving cotton swabs soaked in them in areas where the flies are particularly annoying.

Another effective option is vinegar. It is enough to mix white vinegar with water in equal proportions and pour it into a bottle with a spray gun, and the fly spray is ready. It can be sprayed on the insects' favorite surfaces and can also be used as a cleaning agent.

Aromatic herbs and spices such as basil, mint, rosemary or cloves also repel flies. They are good to use in the kitchen. Put a bouquet of herbs on the table. You can use them for cooking at the same time and they will keep pests away from the table.

Flowers will also help in the fight against them. Flies do not like the scent of lavender or velvets very much. Therefore, a pot with such a flower on the windowsill will be just right in the warm season.
