Herring is the healthiest fish, according to experts. It is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega-6 and Omega-3. They help protect blood vessels from atherosclerosis and strengthen the immune system. The content of healthy fatty acids in herring is the same as in salmon and trout! It is best eaten marinated, made into spreads, forshmak, snacks, and salads.
Culinary expert Valerii Ponomar shared a recipe for a real Odesa forshmak, made with onions and apples, on Instagram.
Ingredients:
- Herring - 1 pc.
- Onion - 1/2 pc.
- Green apple - 1/2 pc.
- Egg - 1 pc.
- Soft butter - 1 tbsp. l
- Lemon juice (if the apple is not too sour)
- Black pepper - to taste
Method of preparation:
1. Peel and finely chop the herring.
2. Grate the onion, apple and boiled egg. Add oil and lemon juice, mix.
Serve with black toasted bread!
